no Itemid in Breadcrumbs

I am using mtree 2.2.3 with Joomla 1.7.

Layout with modules on the right column is working properly except when clicking on the breadcrumb to go back up the tree. The problem is that no Itemid is being added to the breadcrumb link and subsequently no right column being displayed.

Thanks for any help.
