Default Feature suggestion: direct menu link to category

It would be really helpful, if it would be possible to add a menu directly from the joomla menu manager directly to a category and not only to the root.

I think there are lot of people outside that need a nice component for a one category
listing only or that want to create several “independent“ listings of ..

Examples: trade show exhibitor lists..

best regards
alex

I might be missing something here but what's wrong with using an External Link from Joomla's Menu Manager???

All you have to do is navigate to a category in the front end, copy the URL excluding the Http://.... part

Example Arts/Movies

My full Url = http://www.mywebsite.com/21-directory/arts/movies.html

Just copy/paste this part in an External Link:
21-directory/arts/movies.html

Works for me!.

If it works for me and also others, but not you then you need to look into WHY and find what's stopping it, because there's no reason it shouldn't work.

First thing I'd check is your SEO settings in Joomla Global Configuration I have all of the following set to YES.

Search Engine Friendly URLs
Use Apache mod_rewrite (see the note on this before enabling)
Adds Suffix to URL

You could also try using the full URL

The key here is experimentation, try different settings, check Plugins, look through your server logs as these can sometimes point to a cause. Like the old saying goes.... If at first you don't succeed try, try, try again!.

There are multiple problems with the non solution - just copying the new link

1.) The SEO creates a link obviously based oh the menu - if I move the directlory menu entry - the link is dead.
Something else was probably the reason for my 404 - I had a temporary menu for admin only and navigated to the directory by that the link - so the menu path was not valid for the standard user.

2.) In the navigation (breacrumbs..) I have at least one level too much.

My full Url = http://www.mywebsite.com/21-directory/arts/movies.html

The 21-directory is just irritating the users.

RE: The 21-directory is just irritating the users.

In my original post it was not intended for you to copy and use my example of
My full Url = http://www.mywebsite.com/21-directory/arts/movies.html

YOU need to navigate to your desired category on YOUR website and copy the needed URL.

21-directory part refers to the Menu item name I created to my Mtree Component. Any URL in Joomla that points to a component will always contain the menu item name to that component followed by the category structure to the item.

So if you used 21-directory and don't like it - change it so something more acceptable to you.

Creating menu links is not rocket science it just takes a bit of thought and testing.

Default We need this feature!

If Mosets Tree has this direct menu creating feature plus ability to specify custom fields for certain categories, then Mosets Tree would be the #1 web directory script out there. It would mean more customers and more sales.

I totally agree with the comments being written here. I'm wondering what SEF tools you guys are using to shorten your urls for Joomla 1.6.

The main issue I'm having with not having this capability is the one below:

I create a hidden menu link let's say "list" and the urls look as follow

http://www.site.com/list/directory/s...ory/venue.html

I would rather have http://www.site/directory/sub-directory/venue.html

If the tool was added in Joomla Menu Manger then we could hotlink directly to a category which would resolve this issue.

Dknight how hard would it be for you to add this feature on 2.2.x tree?

I'm not a Joomla coder so I wouldn't know how hard it would be.
